PLOT SYNOPSES

Amelie

As a child Amelie is misdiagnosed with a heart defect, so she grows up without much real life contact with others and develops her own fantastical sense of love, beauty and justice. After finding a lost treasure she embarks on a journey of secretly transforming others’ lives with hilarious consequences. Amélie won Best Film at the European Film Awards; it also won four César Awards (including Best Film and Best Director), two BAFTA Awards (including Best Original Screenplay), and was nominated for five Academy Awards.

Chocolat
Comedy-drama. English. Run time 121 mins. Directed by Lasse Hallström, 2000.
Starring Juliette Binoche, Judi Dench, Alfred Molina, Lena Olin, Johnny Depp, Carrie-Anne Moss.

1960s France: Vianne Rocher and her pre-teen daughter move into a conservative town and open a chocolate shop just as lent is beginning. They are met with skepticism and resistance by most of the townsfolk, and shake up the rigid morality of the community even more when Vianne takes up with Roux, the leader of the river drifters. As Vianne begins to work her magic and help those around her, the townspeople are soon won-over by her exuberance and her delicious chocolates - except for the mayor, who is determined to shut her down. Based on the novel of the same name by Joanne Harris. The film was nominated for five Academy Awards, including Best Picture. It was also nominated for eight BAFTAs, and four Golden Globes. Judi Dench won a Screen Actors Guild Award for her performance in the film.
